Happy Birthday Roald

One of my favourite Roals Dahl quotes

I grew up with Roald Dahl’s stories. They were the fuel to my already rather overactive imagination. We passed long car journeys immersed in his audio books, lost in giant Peaches and Chocolate factories, George’s crazy concoctions, the horrible tales of the Twits, the terrifying vision of Miss Trunchball and Matilda’s deeply enviable magic. I read way beyond my bedtime, devouring Roald Dahl’s revolting Rhymes, Dirty Beasts, and The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me (I can still recite the song), amongst others. In fact I owe an awful lot to Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake, two of my hero’s, and cannot wait to tell their stories to my own future kidlets.

So, Happy Birthday dear Roald. And a very heart felt thank you.

What's  your favourite Roald Dahl story?

  1. Esio Trot, Esio Trot, teg reggib, reggib! Bloody love Roald Dahl (you'd have to be a soul-less fool not to, in my opinion). I loved the Twits and the Witches, although they both scared me :)

  4. The BFG ... my kids never tired of the book or the animation. And they used to torture my mother by making her read them George's Marvellous Medicine ;)

  7. The BFG. I love it so much. But I love EVERYTHING he wrote. Happy birthday indeed. Have you been keeping up with the plans to keep his writing shed and all it's contents safe?

  10. I've just bought a box set of Roald Dahl books. I can't wait to re-read them. My favourite story was always Matilda as I wanted her powers. I recently read The Magic Finger with a child at school and enjoyed all the subtleties of it in a totally new adult way. x

  12. Danny the Champion of the World! Have very romantic notions of living in a gypsy caravan as a result. The BFG and Matilda run very close seconds though!

  13. My favourite is Who is Afraid of the Witches (not sure if it is called that in English though) and I was so so scared of the book and the movie based on it. I'm sure I still would secretly be a little bit scared. Oh and when I was pregnant I bought Little Bear an audio box set of Dahl's books. Can't wait to listen to them together with her.
