The Papered Parlour at the V&A Museum of Childhood

Ray and I went along to a brilliant event the other week, which I wrote about for Amelia's magazine.

Fashion in the Age of Austerity, organised by the Papered Parlour, combined so many exciting elements that I don’t quite know where to begin. It was in the most wonderful building, amongst some rare, antique toys in glass cabinets. Fashion designer and V&A Trustee Betty Jackson was there looking radiant in red lipstick, there was a brilliant panel debate, live music, shopping and craft workshops...

One of the key messages I took from the event was that if you want to shop ethically you can’t be afraid of complexity. Lucy Siegle explained that it isn’t as simple as goodies and baddies in ethical fashion. If you scratch the surface of the ethical issues of clothing supply, you’d be forgiven for getting a little…muddled. There’s organic, local, hand made, made from natural fibres, made in the UK...

  1. I will certainly read on, but wow at the Portrait of Hannah! I've just emailed it to her in case she hasn't seen it already, it's lovely.

  2. Looks like a really interesting event- certainly some food for thought there. As someone on a ridiculously tight budget, I'm definitely a make do and mend kind of girl, but do find myself practically forced to pick up basics for the children from places like Primark, where I hate to think of the circumstances in which the items were made.

Also I've never heard of the Museum of Childhood and am now depserate to go- looks brill! x

  3. Really wanted to go to this - and it's just around the corner from my house! Don't know how I missed it because I wrote it in my diary ... glad it was a success anyway. Hopefully I can catch a similar event in the near future.

  4. Looks like it would have been really interesting. It is a constant inner struggle when you are faced with the constant marketing borage. Any tips on how you avoid temptation?

p.s is there an almost naked man in orange briefs in the top picture?

  5. Ah Hannah, I feel like this is another St James' park moment for the two of us...my WI, the Shoreditch Sisters, had a stall at this event, and I would have been there, (and maybe finally met you face to face!) but, I had tickets to Frankenstein that night so didn't go. Shouldn't have gone to Frankenstein, the event looks and sounded amazing, and Benedict Cumberbatch was ill, so Anna and I ended up being v. disappointed, ho hum.

Still, it is a small, funny world that we live in.
