This week I love...

Did you know that I have a bit of an embroidery obsession? Well I really do. Do you remember my first lame attempt? (No, I wasnt 4 when I made it I was 24!) Since then my love of embroidery has been on a strict eye candy basis while I muster up the energy for a second attempt. But luckily for me, a talented lady with a pretty name has plugged the gap admirably since I began following her blog last year. Joetta Maue writes the lovely 'little yellow birds' blog where she posts images of her work in progress through to completion, and so far I think I've loved all of it. So in honour of the looming weekend, and for July, and just because its nice, I thought I'd share it with you too! (Thank you Joetta for letting me share!)

This is from her recent show called 'Line'. I love it. Feminine, fluid, provocative... and inspired by her Grandmothers garden!

She says of her work:

'I use my daily life as the main subject of my work with the idea of the work being honest, even painfully so, coming from my desire to be true to my emotions, insecurities, strengths, and intelligence without fear of ridicule or censure from a patriarchal society. By making work that resides within the realm of the everyday, everyday objects, and the female, I am attempting to defy and contest masculine censure. In effect, I reclaim my femininity: the quality of being feminine, without the fear of losing strength or respect.'

'sentiments'

'hooped words'

'Laying'

'exhausted'

Images from her open studio's...

(cant find the name of these 2, but i think the one on the right is my favourite)

Isn't it great? Don't you wish you could pick some some linen and thread and embroider, just like that? And make beautiful, provocative work that honours ancient embroidery techniques with a bit of kick ass feminism in there too? I do.

See more of her work on her blog, or visit her Etsy shop (Oh how I would love to own one of these pieces!)

Have a great weekend!

I love the concept of all of this, it is so strong, and yet feminine.
